Rum and Carrot Cocktail

If you have seen Ping’s Carrot Cocktailย (Ping’s Pickings), I am sure it has stayed engraved in your memory as one of the most unusual drinks in the world. Vegetable juice is not something frequently seen in cocktail recipes, so even though I love both carrot juice and rum, I hesitated for a couple of weeks before making it.ย When I finally did, I simplified it and opted for a brave, only carrot and rum mixture (Ping has included some other ingredients, click here to see her recipe).

This beautiful cocktail was refreshing, slightly tart and the rum gave this innocent-looking glass a wicked and very pleasant twist. Drinking healthy carrot juice with the obvious presence of high percentage liquor is a very amusing experience. Definitely not for children, but strongly recommended, especially to carrot juice fans!ย Thank you, Ping, for this amazing drink idea I would never dare tasting if it wasn’t for your enthusiasm and encouraging words.

TIP: I used bottled carrot juice which included some lemon juice, which made the drink slightly tart. If you press the juice on your own, taste it to check if it’s not too sweet and add one tablespoon lemon juice in order to obtain a slightly tangy result.

Preparation: 5 minutes

Ingredients (serves 1):

150 ml very cold carrot juice

(1 tablespoon lemon juice for those who prefer tart cocktails)

4 tablespoons white rum

ice

Pour the juice(s) into a glass.

Add the rum, give it a stir and add at least one big ice cube.

Serve.

  1. Oooo … this was the surprise you mentioned! I’m so happy you tried it! Isn’t it amazing that carrot juice and rum go so well together? I do love the cinnamon, star anise addition as well. You really have to try that … it gives it an extra new dimension … unless you’re not into spices ๐Ÿ™‚
Thank you for trying this out. I’m so glad you like it!
I love the pic … the simplicity of it … goes so well with the whole concept of the recipe!

    1. Thank you so much, Ping! I’m happy you like the surprise ๐Ÿ™‚ I was so curious to see how carrot juice and rum tasted together, I simply had to strip off the recipe of the rest. In the future I will certainly add some spices, apple juice and other ingredients you have used. I am glad you like the photo. Thank you for the compliment!

  2. I like the rum to juice ratio:) 4 tablespoon sounds little but its not – either 60 or 80 ml, depending on which spoon and which table. Is that why you wrote tablespoons so it sounds less?:) Its a good trick.

    1. Thank you, Mr. Three-Cookies. Actually adding rum in tablespoons was easier for me than measuring it in anything else… It’s true that it sounds less ๐Ÿ˜‰ I will try this trick in future cocktail recipes.

  3. I’m all for working in veggies wherever I can ๐Ÿ˜‰ and I also love the idea of lemon here… what a lovely, refreshing cocktail idea Sissi and so gorgeous too. I always say the most dazzling colours come from nature. Just look at that orange hue… beautiful.

    1. Thank you so much, Kelly. I also loved the natural juice colour. I bought organic one, with no artificial additives (only lemon juice), so if I made my own juice I suppose it would be at least as beautiful as this one.

    1. Thank you so much, Nami. I love carrot juice but try limiting myself to rare drinking occasions because I get addicted (really) and don’t want to become all orange (when you drink too much carrot juice the skin becomes orange). It is definitely a very healthy drink.

  4. Wow, this is definitely interesting Sissi! While growing up I liked carrot juice a lot, though have not had it for years now, maybe it’s time to give the adult version a try? ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you so much, Jeno. If you like carrot juice, I think you would enjoy this adult version.

  5. my comment didn’t go through ): I was just saying I used to be really obsessed over carrot-orange juice in primary school (ever tried that combo before?), I woudl have it everyday after school and I turned abit yellow. my mum thought i was jaundiced but the doctor said it was just all that beta carotene, but it sure scared my mum enough to stop me from drinking my favourite juice ): nice to see the mention of carrot juice again after so many years, and in a cocktail at that!

    1. Thank you, Shuhan. Sorry for your comment ๐Ÿ™ When I was in high school I also loved carrot and orange juice! Funny, isn’t it? I had a friend who wanted to get a nice skin tone before the Summer and she has also become all orange! Since then I try not to drink it every day, but I admit when I start buying it, I get addicted very easily. Do try it one day with rum, I’m very curious if you would like it.

    1. Thank you so much, Liz. You mean, I stripped it ๐Ÿ˜‰ I was so curious how carrot and rum tasted in a drink, I simply couldn’t resist the temptation.

  6. I’m not sure if I would have ever thought of this combination in a million years, but it seems to offer a balance of health and relaxation. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Me neither! It was worth trying, but I do not recommend if you don’t like carrot juice.

  7. I’ve always felt like carrot juice was missing a certain “je ne sais quoi”… I guess I like the tartness which comes from tomato and other blended vegetable dishes. Maybe the thing it’s been missing for me is actually a jigger of rum, haha ๐Ÿ˜€

    Love the colour!

    1. Thanks, Charles. As I said it’s only for carrot juice fans ๐Ÿ˜‰ I have always loved carrot juice, not to mention rum, so I enjoyed it a lot.

    1. Thank you for the kind words! I thought it might look scary to some people who hate carrots ๐Ÿ˜‰ For me the taste was excellent.
